This part of the site is dedicated to the Battle of Britain. The North East of England did not feature much in this battle as such, it rarely gets a mention. August 15, 1940, however, was a day with a difference. On this day the Luftwaffe attacked the north East in force - the one and only time it did so. The following is an account of what took place that day. The attack was known as the Northern Flank. Its aftermath became known to the Luftwaffe as Black Thursday.
